Absence and Illness

Letting Us Know About Absence

If your child is not coming in, please let us know as soon as possible by email, phone call or text, and include the reason for their absence. If we do not hear from you, we will phone you as part of our safeguarding practice.

You can contact us via: thefledglingsclophill@gmail.com or phone/text: 07908 162354

If your child has an appointment and will not be in, please let us know in advance where possible, or first thing on the day.

When to Keep Your Child at Home
If your child is unwell, please do not send them into Fledglings. When children are poorly, what they need most is their parent.

If you have given your child Calpol or any other medication before arriving (and we are not already aware of it), please tell us when you drop them off.

We do not discriminate against any child or adult due to illness or medical condition.

We take an individual approach, always considering safeguarding when deciding whether parents need to be called.

Illnesses and Exclusion Periods
We cannot provide care for children who are unwell, have a temperature, have diarrhoea and/or sickness, or who have an infectious disease for which the NHS advises children must stay at home (other than HIV or Hepatitis B).

If a child becomes ill during a session, we will contact someone on their emergency contact form. A first-aid-trained staff member will care for them until collection.

48-Hour Rule
Children (and staff) must be clear of diarrhoea and/or vomiting for at least 48 hours before returning.

Rashes
If a child presents with a rash, they should see a doctor to ensure it is not a communicable condition requiring time off.

Communicable Conditions – Return Guidance
• Slapped cheek: May return once body rash appears and diagnosis is confirmed.
• Chickenpox: May return once all spots have scabbed over.
• Hand, foot and mouth: Allowed in setting once diagnosed by a doctor, provided the child is well enough.
• Impetigo: Non-contagious 48 hours after starting prescribed treatment, or when patches have dried and crusted if untreated.
• Scarlet fever: May return 48 hours after the first dose of antibiotics, if well enough.
• Measles: Stay off for at least 4 days from when the rash appears.

Head Lice
Children with head lice are not excluded but must be treated before returning.

Following Immunisations
Some children feel unwell after vaccinations. Please monitor your child, and keep them at home if they are not well enough to attend.

General Notes
Most childhood illnesses are short-lived and not serious. However, we sometimes have very vulnerable children in our setting, so your vigilance helps protect everyone.
