24/09/23 The Village Scarecrow Festival Winners!

Writer's picture: The FledglingsThe Fledglings

Our Friday children were very busy this week building a ‘Mother Nature’ scarecrow for the village scarecrow competition.

They pulled the wagon into the woods and filled it with sticks, leaves, conkers and anything else that they liked the look of.

Then, they pulled the wagon all the way to the middle of the village looking for a nice flat spot to use. They worked together to hammer the base into the ground and make sure it was sturdy enough to build around.

They stuffed some old clothes with hay and attached the body onto the base and then began to carefully balance the collected sticks around it like a den base to build a big skirt shape. They used secateurs to prune back some hedges and bushes (with permission of course) to help fill out the skirt.

With a little adult help, due to the height, the children attached a mask and hat on top and decorated the whole scarecrow with flowers they picked.

We think our scarecrow looked fantastic…

as did the rest of the village as I am very pleased to say that we came first!

I can’t wait for the children to share their delicious chocolatey prize next Friday when they’re all together again!

Mother Nature really is earth’s best teacher!
